Basic insurance
Basic insurance covers cervical screening (Pap test – and depending on the programme also HPV) according to legal requirements. Often this applies: two smear tests (Pap tests) one year apart – then (if results are normal) every 3 years. Depending on age, history or symptoms, more frequent checks may be medically appropriate – in that case it can be billed as a diagnostic evaluation.
What is typically included in a preventive check‑up?
- Brief discussion (medical history / symptoms)
- Examination incl. breast exam
- Cervical smear (Pap – and depending on the programme also HPV)
Additional examinations that may be useful:
- Transvaginal ultrasound is usually not part of routine preventive care. If you have symptoms or a specific question and an ultrasound is medically indicated, it is billed as a diagnostic evaluation.
- If you would like an ultrasound in addition and without an insurance‑covered indication, this is usually a self‑pay service: comprehensive transvaginal ultrasound typically around 75 CHF.
- Breast ultrasound without an indication is also a self‑pay service (typical price: 100 CHF).
Supplementary insurance
Some supplementary insurance plans cover preventive examinations more frequently (e.g., every 2 years). This varies by contract. Depending on supplementary insurance, a transvaginal ultrasound may also be covered as part of preventive care – please check the conditions directly with your insurer.
