Preparation & contraindications

  • If you have had no unprotected intercourse since the start of your cycle, pregnancy can usually be ruled out.
  • Please tell us about current medications, allergies and gynecological medical history.
  • Not suitable with acute pelvic infection, unexplained bleeding or pregnancy.
  • If you wish, we can combine insertion with additional contraception counselling.

Aftercare & check‑ups

  • Check‑up after 4–6 weeks, then annually or if you have symptoms
  • What is normal? Mild cramps/spotting can occur at first
  • Warning signs (e.g., fever, severe pain): please contact us

Special cases & options

Different IUD sizes are available for young patients, breastfeeding mothers or perimenopause. We will assess together whether, for example, a smaller hormonal IUD (e.g., Kyleena) or a copper chain makes sense.

If you switch to another contraceptive method, we advise on the best timing so protection is maintained. We also offer cycle and bleeding checks – see also menopause care and our teen consultations.

FAQ

Does insertion hurt?

Usually well tolerated. We prepare in advance (e.g., pain medication) and offer a local anesthetic if needed.

Which IUD is right for me?

We decide together based on bleeding patterns, cycle, medical conditions and your preferences.

When am I protected?

Usually immediately, depending on the timing of insertion. We advise you individually.

How long can the IUD stay in place?

Depending on the model, 3–10 years. We record the replacement date in your documents and can remind you if needed.
